Hot stone massage uses smooth, heated stones that rest along your back and glide over tight muscles. The warmth may help muscles loosen sooner and can make it easier to relax into firm pressure. At Serenity Zen, hot stones are an enhancement you can add to any service, including a foot massage.
The short answer
What it is: heated stones used on and alongside a massage.
What it may do: help tight muscles let go sooner, and help you settle in.
Who it suits: people who run cold, or who tense up under firm pressure.
How to add it: choose Hot Stones after you pick your service online, or ask at the desk.
What happens during a hot stone massage
Smooth, heated stones rest along your back while the work begins, and others glide over tight muscles with the oil. The rest of the session runs as usual, at the pressure you asked for.
The stones should feel deeply warm, never hot. If one feels too warm, say so and it comes off right away.
What the warmth may do
Warm muscle tends to be easier to work, so the same pressure may feel less sharp and reach further. Many people also find warmth easier to relax into, which is why hot stones are a good choice if you tense up under deep pressure.
The heat can also make it easier to wind down, which may make it easier to fall asleep that night. It is comfort, not treatment, and it does not replace care from your doctor.
When to skip it, or ask first
Tell the front desk or your therapist before the session if any of these apply:
Sunburn, a rash or broken skin where the stones would go.
Reduced feeling in your skin, for example from diabetes, since you may not notice if a stone is too warm.
A fresh injury that is still swollen.
Pregnancy. Hot stones are available during a prenatal massage; ask the desk when you book.
If you are unsure, your doctor's advice comes first.
Hot stones or cupping?
Both are enhancements, and they work in opposite directions. Hot stones press warmth in; cupping lifts the tissue with suction. Hot stones suit people who want to sink into the session. Cupping suits a stubborn spot you want worked from a different angle. Either one can be added to any service.
From Dr. Nick
Warmth is one of the simplest ways to help a muscle stop guarding. When someone tells me firm pressure makes them tense up, hot stones are where I would start.
Common questions
Can I add hot stones to a foot massage?
Yes. Hot stones can be added to any service, including a foot massage and the Combination.
Does hot stone massage hurt?
It should not. The stones should feel deeply warm, and the pressure is whatever you ask for. Say lighter, deeper or cooler at any point.
Is it worth it?
It is worth trying if you run cold, if firm pressure makes you brace, or if you want a slower, heavier kind of calm. If you like a brisk session, you may not miss it.
How much does it add?
Hot stones are priced on their own. Every enhancement and its price is shown when you book online, after you choose your service.
