What Is a Couples Massage, and What Happens During One?

A couples massage is two massages at the same time, so the two of you share the visit while each of you has your own therapist. At Serenity Zen, you start together, and each of you chooses your own service, length and pressure. Where you'll be depends on what you book: if you both book a body massage, you can be side by side in our private room for two, and for foot massages or the Combination you'll sit next to each other in our Reflex Lounge, each in your own curtained space.

Giving it as a gift? A gift card can cover a couples massage at either studio.

Any two guests can book together, so it works the same way for partners, friends, siblings or a parent and an adult child.

Side by side in a private room or the lounge

The private room for two has a table and a therapist for each of you. If being in the same room matters to you, book ahead or call the studio, so we can check that the room is open at your time.

In the Reflex Lounge, the two of you sit next to each other, and heavy curtains close around each station, so each of you has your own space with the other close by. The Combination is a foot massage that flows into a body massage, the best of both worlds in one visit.

You can also book different services, such as a body massage for one of you and a foot massage for the other, and you'll still start together, but if being side by side matters to you, choose services that happen in the same place.

If one of you has never had a massage

If you're bringing someone who has never had a massage, a foot massage can be an easy first step. There's nothing to change out of, and it starts with a warm mineral soak before your therapist works the reflex points of the feet and lower legs at the pressure you ask for, while the two of you sit next to each other in the lounge. If your partner would like a little more, the Combination begins the same way and then flows into a body massage.

If a male or female therapist would help your partner feel more at ease, ask for one in the booking notes or at the front desk, and we match it whenever staffing allows. And if the fit isn't right on the day, tell the front desk and we'll change your therapist.

In a Google review of our West Covina studio, one guest who came in for a couples massage wrote, "It was my first time getting a massage, and I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all."

Booking for two

If you're planning it for both of you, either Book link on this page opens the group booking, so you add the second guest and pick a service for each of you at the same start time. In the notes field at the end, say that you're booking together, so we can set things up for the two of you, and add any therapist request there too. If you'd rather talk it through, call West Covina at (626) 915-8889 or Diamond Bar at (909) 766-4879 and we'll set it up.

Choose the same length if you'd like to finish together. A couples visit needs two therapists available at the same time, so booking ahead holds your time, especially on weekends and evenings, and if your schedule is flexible, Tuesday through Thursday often has more open times for two.

When you arrive

Plan to arrive 15 minutes early, both of you, so you each get your full session. If you arrive more than five minutes late, we may need to shorten your session so the next guest can start on time. Parking is complimentary at both studios, each with its own lot right outside the door.

Someone at the front desk will greet you and show you in. There are lockers at the front with a key bracelet, and you keep the key with you during the session. If either of you has a health or medical condition, tell the front desk and your therapist before you start.

Changing and staying covered

For a foot massage you stay fully clothed, and only your shoes and socks come off, so wear something that rolls above the calf. For a body massage, each of you undresses to your own comfort level while your therapists are out of the room, then lies under a sheet and a blanket, with only the area being worked on uncovered. Most guests keep their underwear on. In the Combination, you undress for the body massage behind the curtains at your station, to the level you're comfortable with, and stay draped the whole time.

Each of you decides what to wear for yourself, and our post on what to wear to a massage has more on it. If either of you would feel more at ease with walls around you than curtains, book a body massage, since every body massage happens in a private room.

During the massage

Before your therapist begins, they ask where you want the work and how much pressure you want, and each of you answers for yourself. You can change that answer at any point in the session by telling your therapist. Each of you can also add an enhancement to your own session, such as hot stones or a steam eye mask.

Another couple put it this way in their Google review: "The massage therapists took the time to ask if there were any specific areas we’d like them to focus on, which made the experience feel personalized."

You can talk softly or not at all, and we ask every guest to silence their phone and keep their voice low, so the people around you can rest too.

When your sessions end

After a body massage, your therapist steps out so you can sit up slowly and dress at your own pace, and then there's water or tea.

Tipping is always optional. We recommend 20 percent or more, depending on how you feel after your session.

Each of you tips on your own service, and if one of you pays for both, the tip is shared evenly between your two therapists. Every tip goes to your therapist, and you can tip in cash or by card or have the front desk add it to your payment. A gift card can't be used for the tip.

For an occasion, or as a gift

Guests book it for anniversaries and date nights, for a mother and daughter, two friends or a birthday, and many come back together again and again. Another Google review began, "When my girlfriend and I are due for a reset, Serenity Zen is our go to place for a nice relaxing massage."

If you're still deciding between booking together and two solo visits, our post on whether a couples massage is worth it talks through that choice.

As a gift, a gift card works at both studios for any service and never expires, and it can be sent by email right away or on a date you choose, with your own message, so the two of them can book a time that suits them both. The booking page lists every length and its price, which can help you choose an amount, and gift cards are also sold at the front desk.
